A tragic hit-and-run accident has claimed the life of a young boy along the leaving residents in deep mourning and sparking renewed outcry over poor road safety and emergency medical response in the state.
The incident occurred around 8:46 p.m.,along Ilorin – Ogbomoso road when the boy, after disembarking from a commercial tricycle, attempted to cross the road but was fatally struck by a speeding truck.
An eyewitness, Marshal Alaro, who rushed the victim to the hospital, took to social media to express his grief and frustration. “We tried to save him, but the hospital lacked a specialist for his head injuries. He was only given first aid and referred to General Hospital Oke Oyi. This is a wake-up call for the government to equip our hospitals with the right personnel,” he wrote.
Confirming the incident, the Kwara State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Mufutau Irekeola, said investigations are ongoing. “We responded to the distress call and are working to identify the victim and track down the hit-and-run driver,” he stated.
He urged motorists to be more responsible, especially at night. “Many of these accidents are preventable if traffic rules are followed. Road safety is a shared responsibility.”
The tragedy has reignited calls from residents and advocacy groups for stricter traffic enforcement and urgent improvements in emergency healthcare services across Kwara State.
