The Ògo Àkúré Mandate Group, under the leadership of its Convener and House of Representatives hopeful for Akure North/South Federal Constituency, Ayodeji D. F. Oluleye, has applauded the bold and visionary decision of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa to commence the long-awaited rehabilitation of the Owena Dam Water Supply Scheme—a milestone initiative set to transform water access across Ondo State, particularly in Akure, the State capital.
At the groundbreaking ceremony in Igbara-Oke, Ifedore Local Government, Governor Aiyedatiwa reiterated his administration’s commitment to restoring uninterrupted pipe-borne water to households and communities. This intervention offers renewed hope to millions who have endured decades of severe water scarcity.
A Major Public-Health Victory for Akure and Ondo State
The revival of the Owena Dam goes far beyond infrastructure — it is a critical public-health intervention with far-reaching impact.
Access to clean and safe water will:
-reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and diarrheal infections;
-strengthen sanitation and hygiene in markets, schools, and healthcare facilities;
-support environmental health programmes across Akure and neighbouring LGAs;
-enhance community resilience during emergencies and disease outbreaks.
The comprehensive rehabilitation — including treatment-plant overhaul, restoration of transmission mains, and expansion of distribution networks — is expected to significantly improve water security for homes, businesses, and public institutions.
Speaking at the aftermath of the groundbreaking ceremony, Oluleye Ayodeji said;
“Governor Aiyedatiwa has demonstrated leadership worthy of emulation. Reviving the Owena Water Project is not just an infrastructural achievement — it is a lifesaving intervention for the people of Akure and Ondo State.
Reliable access to clean water remains a foundation for public health, dignity, and community well-being.
We commend the Governor for prioritising what truly matters.”
