Amidst a resurgence in communal tensions due to herder-farmer crisis and kidnapping in Ondo State, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, the gubernatorial candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the state’s November 2024 polls, has advised the government to tackle the issue holistically.
In a statement, Akingboye advised the state government to, as a matter of urgency, establish a 25,000-strong community policing unit to work closely with security agencies, as well as set up a state police force to collaborate with the vigilance group, Amotekun.
“With dedicated Ondo State police personnel within local communities alongside Amotekun network, we can create a more secure environment for residents and businesses to thrive,” Akingboye said.
He also advocated for equipping security agencies with advanced communication gadgets, patrol vehicles and weapons, and addressing underlying issues driving insecurity, such as tensions over land and boundaries.
Akingboye, a Chartered Accountant (UK) and Certified Fraud Examiner (USA), emphasized the need for geospatial surveillance and mapping and creating conducive business environments to reduce attractions for crime.
The SDP candidate’s plan aims to empower citizens and stir interest in skill-based activities, addressing economic and social factors contributing to crime. He further recommended installing state-of-the-art surveillance systems across major towns and cities.
Ondo State has witnessed a surge in kidnapping, mob violence and clashes between protesters and security forces, with marauders attacking farms and highways.
Akingboye’s proposals come as the state seeks effective solutions to restore security and stability.
