Kwara State has lost one of its illustrious sons and democratic icons, as former governor and elder statesman, Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, has passed away at the age of 84.

The seasoned politician, who also served as Minister of Communications, died in the early hours of Wednesday in Abuja, according to a statement by his family.

Born in Igbaja, Kwara State, on February 24, 1941, Adebayo’s legacy spans over four decades of public service, education reform, democratic activism and resistance to military dictatorship.

He was elected senator in 1979 under the Unity Party of Nigeria and later became Kwara State governor in 1983 before the military takeover that truncated the Second Republic. Prior to his governorship, he had served as Commissioner for Education in Kwara State from 1975 to 1978, where he earned praise for advancing educational policies that improved access and quality.

Adebayo became a national figure of conscience in the 1990s when he joined the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), a movement of pro-democracy advocates who challenged the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election widely believed to have been won by Chief MKO Abiola.

In a remarkable show of integrity, Adebayo rejected an appointment by the Abacha regime in 1993, choosing instead to align with the people’s will. His activism came at great personal cost: he was arrested following a 1995 bomb blast in Ilorin and later went into brief exile in Canada in 1996 after reported threats to his life.

Reacting to his death, political leaders and citizens alike have described him as a man of principle, courage and intellect. “He was not just a politician, but a defender of democracy and a lover of truth. Kwara and Nigeria have lost a great man,” said Musa Abdulkadir, a civil rights advocate in Ilorin.

Throughout his lifetime, Cornelius Adebayo was respected not only for his public service but also for his refusal to compromise his beliefs, even in the face of personal danger. His work in education, infrastructure and telecommunications left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s development.

He is survived by his family, admirers and a generation of Nigerians who will continue to draw inspiration from his life of courage and service.
