A group known as Benue Intelligence Watch has accused the Deputy Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Lami Danladi Ogenyi, of allegedly plotting to instigate insecurity in Ado Local Government Area through a planned public protest.
The group made the allegations on Monday during a press conference where it claimed that the lawmaker had previously levelled false accusations against the Executive Chairman of the council, Oche Sunday Oche, over alleged involvement in kidnapping.
According to the group’s National Coordinator, Ambassador Jude Tsegha, Chief Donald Agada, National Secretary and Dr. (Mrs) Helen Akpareshi, Public Relations Officer, the allegations were contained in a petition reportedly sent to the former Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
They said the police later investigated the claims and cleared the council chairman of wrongdoing.
The group further alleged that the deputy speaker had continued to make attempts to undermine the administration of the council chairman.
It claimed that the lawmaker recently held meetings aimed at mobilising youths for a protest against the local government administration.
The group warned that such a protest could escalate tensions in the area and lead to renewed violence.
It therefore called on the Inspector General of Police to disregard any fresh petitions against the council chairman and instead investigate the deputy speaker.
The group also urged the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State to investigate the lawmaker over alleged anti-party activities.
It further appealed to Governor Hyacinth Alia to take steps to prevent political developments capable of threatening peace in the area.
