A Professor of Exercise Science and Sports Psychology at Kwara State University (KWASU), Prof. Ibrahim Abubakar, has raised concerns about the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle, urging Nigerians to embrace regular exercise as a key to better health and disease prevention.

Prof. Abubakar made this call during the 15th Inaugural Lecture of the institution in Malete on Wednesday. His lecture, titled “Man’s Limitation of Himself Against the Potentials and Gifts from His Creator: A Psychological Perspective,” highlighted the numerous health benefits of physical activity.

He explained that regular exercise acts as a therapeutic intervention for various mental health disorders and helps prevent cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases. He stressed that physical activity reduces the risks of chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, colon cancer, joint swelling, and arthritis, which are major contributors to disability and mortality.

Prof. Abubakar noted that the average life expectancy of a Nigerian is between 45 and 55 years, a statistic he attributes to stress and sedentary lifestyles. He urged Nigerians to adopt more active habits to improve their health and longevity.

“Engaging in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity daily is crucial for overall health and weight control, especially among children and adolescents,” he advised. “Exercise is not only preventive but also essential in treating conditions like obesity and high blood pressure and rehabilitating physical disorders.”

He observed that modern conveniences, such as advanced transportation, remote controls, and escalators, have reduced daily physical exertion, leading to increased sedentary behavior and health problems.

Prof. Abubakar called on organizational leaders to incorporate short breaks for stretching or light walking into long meetings to combat inactivity. He also urged tertiary institutions to promote sports and physical activities among students, highlighting their numerous health benefits and potential as alternatives to medication.

In conclusion, Prof. Abubakar’s message is clear: to live longer and healthier lives, Nigerians must prioritize physical activity and reduce sedentary habits.
