The Akure South Local Government Executive Chairman and Ondo State ALGON Chairman, Hon. Dr. Fasua Gbenga Timothy, officially launched the distribution of agroforestry and timber seedlings to farmers in Akure South. This initiative promotes sustainable agriculture, rehabilitates degraded lands, and improves farmers’ livelihoods across Ondo State.
Attended by government officials, traditional rulers, agricultural stakeholders, farmer groups, development partners, and community leaders, the event showcases the Ondo State Government’s commitment, alongside partners, to advancing sustainable cocoa and oil palm farming through agroforestry.
In his opening remarks, Hon. Dr. Fasua called the program a key step toward environmental conservation, food security, and economic development. He commended the partners and the Ondo State Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry for providing support to rural farmers and highlighted that tree planting helps fight climate change, enrich soil fertility, and sustain agriculture. He urged beneficiaries to plant, care for, and protect the seedlings as their future investment.
Mrs. Arogundade Justinah, speaking on behalf of the Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, reviewed the ministry’s successes in collaborating with development organizations to increase agricultural output and environmental sustainability. She emphasized the importance of caring for the seedlings to ensure lasting environmental and economic gains.
Barr. Baratel Kegbe, Head of Local Government Administration, emphasized that agriculture is vital to human survival. He urged farmers to use the seedlings wisely to enhance productivity and livelihoods.
Representing the traditional community, Oba Ayodele Akinnadeju of Alade-Idanre urged farmers to see tree planting as essential to protecting cocoa farms, conserving ecosystems, and fighting climate change. High Chief Filani Folorunsho of the Deji of Akure advised beneficiaries to follow guidelines to maximize their farm and economic benefits.
The State Project Coordinator stated that Ondo is one of the pilot states for this agroforestry project, aimed at promoting sustainable cocoa and oil palm farming. Extension officers will monitor farmers’ progress, ensuring proper planting, care, and long-term success.
The event’s highlight was the official seedling distribution, reaffirming the Ondo State Government, Akure South Local Government, and partners’ commitment to climate-smart farming, forestry, and rural development.
Participants included the Chief of Staff to the Executive Chairman, Hon. Prince Iteyemi Adegoroye; Special Advisers Hon. Tobi Akinnubi and Hon. Tayo Dada; Agriculture Supervisor Hon. Egunjobi; Cocoa Farmers Association Secretary Mr. Tiamiyu Musa; Extension Manager Mr. Babasola Adeniyan; along with various farmer leaders, stakeholders, community members, and distinguished guests.
